Asbestos – What you need to know

Your Safety is Our Priority

At Homes in Somerset, your health and safety are extremely important to us. Some of our homes may contain asbestos materials, especially if they were built before 2000. While asbestos is safe when left undisturbed, it can pose risks if damaged or disturbed. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral used in building materials for its strength and fire resistance. It was commonly used in homes until it was banned in the UK in 1999.

Common Places Asbestos May Be Found:

  • Artex ceilings
  • Pipe boxing
  • Floor tiles
  • Soffits and roof panels
  • Cement sheets in sheds or garages

Is Asbestos Dangerous?

Asbestos is only dangerous when disturbed, as it can release tiny fibres that, when inhaled, can cause serious health conditions. Left alone and in good condition, it’s generally safe.

What We’re Doing

We regularly inspect properties and carry out surveys to monitor and manage any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).

  • Routine inspections to assess the condition of ACMs
  • Safe removal by licensed professionals when needed
  • 24/7 support for any concerns or incidents involving damage to materials

What You Can Do

DOs:

  • Report any damage to walls, ceilings, or other structures immediately
  • Let contractors or tradespeople know if you believe there may be asbestos
  • Follow our guidance during home improvement or repair works

DON’Ts:

  • Drill, sand, or cut suspected asbestos materials
  • Attempt to remove materials yourself
  • Ignore visible damage
