Keeping Customers Safe with Fire Safety Advice

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service recently came to West Bow House in Bridgwater to talk to residents and staff about fire safety.

Homes in Somerset works closely with the service to help keep residents safe, and they will also deliver a Home Safety Visit to anyone who needs one.

There were plenty of great tips and pieces of advice, together with information about fire procedures.

Here are some of their top tips:

  • Ensure electronics are plugged in safely. Make sure sockets aren’t overloaded, and that electrical appliances are unplugged if you are going out or going to bed.
  • Be aware of adaptors – Cube adaptors are more likely to cause a fire than standard extension leads.
  • Don’t plug any heated items into an extension lead.
  • If you’re a smoker, consider fire retardant blankets, and use ashtrays – smoke safely.
  • Washing machines and dishwashers are high-risk items. Never put them on at nighttime and make sure you are in and nearby when you have them running.
  • Keep escape routes clear – this includes corridors and walkways near exit routes. Tuck large items out of the way.
  • Make sure you can hear smoke alarms – if you are hard of hearing, you can request a special alarm with a vibrating pad and flashing light.
  • Don’t rely on pets to alert you to a fire.
  • Be aware if using candles. Don’t forget to blow candles out, or use imitation candles without a real flame.
  • If you have any concerns about fire risks in your home, if you are a vulnerable person, or you would like to request a Home Safety Visit for you or someone you know, you can do so by contacting us.
